Abstract

The increasing complexity of modern software systems has exposed important limitations in conventional software testing, particularly in environments characterized by continuous integration, heterogeneous execution contexts, frequent releases, and large test suites. Intelligent automation seeks to address these limitations by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) into test generation, test prioritization, defect-oriented analysis, regression testing, and adaptive decision-making. This research and review paper examines the theoretical and technical foundations of intelligent software testing by synthesizing the supplied literature on transfer learning, domain adaptation, adversarial learning, representation learning, deep learning, and optimization. Although several cited studies originate from computer vision and domain adaptation, their underlying mechanisms provide transferable principles for software testing, especially for learning across changing application environments, reducing distribution mismatch, selecting informative data, and adapting models to partially overlapping domains. The paper develops a conceptual intelligent testing framework integrating data preparation, learned representation, domain adaptation, test generation, prioritization, execution feedback, and continuous model refinement. The analysis indicates that adversarial adaptation, selective representation, transfer learning, and optimization can potentially reduce the dependence of automated testing systems on manually engineered rules. However, challenges remain concerning data quality, distribution shifts, explainability, computational cost, model reliability, and the validation of AI-generated testing decisions. The study positions intelligent test automation as an adaptive quality-engineering paradigm rather than merely an extension of conventional test automation.
