An Integrated Digital Twin Framework for Automated Construction Project Lifecycle Management and Performance Optimization

The construction industry is undergoing a structural transformation driven by digitalization, automation, and cyber-physical integration. Among emerging paradigms, Digital Twins (DTs) have become a foundational enabler for real-time monitoring, predictive analytics, and lifecycle optimization of construction projects. However, current implementations remain fragmented, with limited integration across design, construction, and operational phases. This research proposes an integrated Digital Twin framework for automated construction project lifecycle management and performance optimization by synthesizing BIM-driven data environments, semantic modeling, robotics-enabled workflows, and physics-based simulation systems.
The study adopts a structured conceptual and analytical methodology based on extensive synthesis of existing digital twin literature in construction engineering. It integrates insights from BIM-to-robotic systems, semantic DT architectures, connectivity detection models, and sustainable construction monitoring frameworks. A key emphasis is placed on closed-loop automation, where real-time feedback from construction sites continuously informs planning, scheduling, and control systems.
Findings indicate that integrated Digital Twin systems significantly enhance decision-making accuracy, resource efficiency, and construction safety while enabling autonomous coordination between human and robotic agents. However, challenges persist in interoperability, data standardization, computational scalability, and real-time synchronization.
The proposed framework contributes a unified conceptual architecture for end-to-end construction lifecycle management, bridging gaps between fragmented DT implementations and enabling performance-driven automation in construction ecosystems.
