Abstract

The rapid expansion of Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystems in smart city environments has introduced unprecedented challenges in real-time data processing, distributed intelligence, scalability, and decision optimization. Traditional cloud-centric architectures are increasingly inadequate due to latency constraints, bandwidth limitations, and the heterogeneous nature of urban data streams. This research proposes a distributed intelligent architecture that integrates IoT, fog computing, edge analytics, and cloudlet-based processing to enable scalable smart city analytics and optimized urban decision-making.
The proposed framework leverages hierarchical computation layers, where edge devices perform preliminary data filtering and feature extraction, fog nodes execute near-real-time analytics, and cloud infrastructure supports deep learning-based global optimization. A key emphasis is placed on edge analytics-driven intelligence, which has been widely recognized as a foundational paradigm for IoT scalability and responsiveness (M,satyanarayan et al., 2015). The architecture further incorporates adaptive workload distribution mechanisms inspired by cloudlet placement optimization strategies and fog computing models.
Through systematic synthesis of existing literature, the study identifies critical gaps in current IoT-driven smart city systems, particularly in dynamic resource allocation, security-aware distributed processing, and context-aware decision optimization. The findings suggest that integrating distributed intelligence across multiple computing layers significantly enhances system responsiveness and reduces latency in urban analytics applications.
