Abstract

The investigation of unsteady laminar flow and associated thermal transport phenomena in elliptic pipe systems represents a critical area of research due to its relevance in advanced engineering applications such as compact heat exchangers, biomedical flow devices, and energy transport systems. Unlike circular geometries, elliptic configurations introduce geometric anisotropy that significantly alters velocity distribution, pressure gradients, and heat transfer characteristics. This study presents a comprehensive analytical and computational framework to examine transient laminar forced convection in elliptic pipes under time-dependent thermal boundary conditions.
The governing equations for incompressible viscous flow and energy transport are formulated in elliptic cylindrical coordinates, incorporating the effects of spatial curvature and non-uniform boundary constraints. Analytical solutions are developed using separation of variables, supported by finite transform techniques and Mathieu function expansions, which are particularly suited for handling elliptic geometries (Gupta, 1964; McLachlan, 1964). To capture transient thermal behavior, oscillatory heat input is introduced as a periodic forcing function, extending classical models of temperature distribution under combined steady and time-varying heat sources (Dube, 1966).
Complementing the analytical framework, a computational model based on finite difference and finite element methods is implemented to simulate flow and thermal fields across a range of governing parameters, including Reynolds number, Prandtl number, ellipticity ratio, and oscillation frequency. The hybrid analytical–computational approach enables validation of theoretical predictions while addressing limitations inherent in closed-form solutions, particularly under complex boundary conditions and higher-order dynamic effects.
The results demonstrate that elliptic geometry significantly influences both velocity and temperature distributions, leading to asymmetric flow patterns and non-uniform thermal gradients. Oscillatory heat input induces phase-shifted temperature responses, with amplitude attenuation and spatial variation dependent on system parameters. The study identifies critical frequency thresholds beyond which heat transfer efficiency declines due to incomplete thermal boundary layer development. Furthermore, increased ellipticity intensifies thermal non-uniformity, resulting in localized hotspots and reduced overall performance.
The findings highlight the necessity of incorporating geometric effects and transient dynamics in the design and optimization of thermal systems. By integrating classical analytical techniques with modern computational methods, this research provides a robust framework for understanding and predicting unsteady thermal-fluid behavior in elliptic pipe systems. The study contributes to the advancement of theoretical modeling and offers practical insights for enhancing heat transfer efficiency in non-circular geometries.
